Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of postpartum depression at six months postpartum on mental health at 72 months postpartum and the emotional and behavioral problems of six-year-old children. The subjects were 192 mother-child pairs who participated in an assessment when the ages of the children were six months and six years old. They were divided into a high-risk group (>13; n=53), a risk group (10-13; n=69), and a control group (<10, n=70) according to EPDS scores. The measured variables were the mothers' levels of depression, anxiety, life satisfaction, marriage satisfaction, and parenting stress and the children's emotional and behavioral development. The results are as follows: First, at 72 months postpartum, those in the high-risk and risk groups showed higher scores for depression, anxiety, and parenting stress and lower scores for life satisfaction and marriage satisfaction compared to those in the control group. Second, the depression scores at six months postpartum had significant effects on the emotional and behavioral development of the six-year-old children and, particularly, somatic symptoms had the highest explanatory power. This study shows that postpartum depression has negative effects on mothers' mental health and on their children's emotional and behavioral development up to 72 months postpartum.
